Sri Lanka's largest mobile network Dialog Telekom launched a pilot project on Terrestrial Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T) a digital television transmission system. With this new technology more television channels can be transmitted using a single UHF band.
At present Dialog's digital broadcasting service covers up to Kaluthara along the southern coastal belt and up to Wattala, north of the Colombo. This digital television service can be received with a normal TV antenna and a special set-top box which is similar to a normal booster.
As Sri Lanka is the first country in south Asia to launch a pilot for DVB-T, Dialog's new digital television service carries 6 Sri Lankan television channels and three foreign channels.
