Bharti Airtel, one of India's largest mobile operators received 2G and 3G license from Sri Lanka Telecommunication Regularity Commission to roll out the Sri Lanka's 5th mobile network. In a press conference officials revealed that Airtel will invest $150 million within 3 years of time in Sri Lanka. After several months of receiving this licences Airtel advertised about their job vacancies in some week end news papers and registered a domain name also under Bharti Airtel Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. This domain was also hanging around for several week without a web site (redirected to hosting account default page) and now it seems they haven't paid for the hosting account. how ever they have registerd this domain for another 10 more years in advance.
In the last quarter of 2007 I noticed some Airtel engineers going here and there searching for locations to install towers. But after that I don't aware whether they have installed any but I guess still they haven't.At the same time it was said that they were planning to start Airtel operations in Sri Lanka by April 2008.
As things goes like this I don't think that Airtel will be able to do a remarkable revolution in Sri Lanka in upcoming years. The reason is Airtel hinted that they are going to reduce the outgoing call charges to Rs 2 per minute. It was a great news for all the mobile users at that time because average rate was around Rs 6 at that time. Most of the mobile users who were Dialog GSM customers were paying around Rs 7 per minute without VAT and Hutch, Mobitel and Tigo customers were paying around Rs 6 - 5. Later Mobitel reduced their charges to Rs 2 Mobitel 2Mobitel within day time and following that Hutch also reduced to Rs 2 all day along. Very recently Tigo launched 3 revolutionary packages called T1,T2 and T2 which charges only Rs 3 per outgoing minute just Rs 1 more than Airlte's promised price.
However let's hope some more leverage in Sri Lankan mobile phone market with the Airtel entrance as it will benefit all of us.

ReplyDeleteDon't under estimate Airtel. I am working for Airtel in India. I know all activities which are from Airtel Sri Lanka. They launching with perfect strategy. We have implemented Data centre too. Wait for few more days.
ReplyDeleteActually i regret if i have done an underestimation. But this article is based on the facts that Airtel itself announce time to time. Yes, everyone is waiting for this new player.. But the problem is being postponed time to time. Hopefully let's await for Airtel Sri Lanka until this September..
ReplyDeleteFinally Airtel has announced their new laung day as 13th November. As we all beleive 13 is not going to be a good day for any of us; so does for Airtel Lanka. Anyway Announcing of their arrival have had a great impact on mobile call charges. But unfortunately Airtel has recruited an HR Executive who used to work at Softlogic as their recruitment executive. Who is giving out most of strategic information to outsiders. Diolog has now taken care of their HR very well.
ReplyDeleteis there any vacancies?????
ReplyDeleteinshard.l@gmail.com
Airtel will strugle, how many indian companies have succeded in Lanka?? Appolo? ICICI? IOC? The CEO Amali has resigned already, It's gonna be a tough ride for the local guys here coz they feel that it's pretty tough to work with the Indians..! future has the answers, Airtel might have some political advantages, but my personal view is that Airtel could have invested the Money in other expansion programmes in India!! may be on the long run they will make a strong presence, may be that's their forecast!!
ReplyDeleteIs there any marketing or customer service vacancies in sri lanka
ReplyDeleteIs there any marketing or customer care vacancies in Sri Lanka?
ReplyDeleteyes as I got to know from a friend who went for an interview there, they have some vacancies for customer care executives. He has went for and interview for the post of software engineer, but only one other except him has been there for the interview. Seems like Airtel wants to postpond their launch date once more. anyway if i got to know about any airtel vacancies in sri lanka i will put them as a comment in this page. I hope , admin will not ban me. :)
ReplyDeletei would like to that how many towers are going to be established in sri lanka by airtell lanka ltd and if this is having a satelite communucation system why are they going to establish much more towers..
ReplyDeleteI think it is a false understanding about Airtel. I have also heard this story, but I belive it is just a false stroy. Because GSM and 3G technologies are not made to use satelites to transmit signals. The other this is satelite communication is much coslly when compared to GSM and 3G for the momnet. The other drawback is setalite commincation require line-of-sight with between the mobile phone and satelite. So that means satelite communication does not work well indoors. So Airtel is also sameas others and deploying GSM network as all others does.
ReplyDeleteI see lot of interesting comments about Airtel and what’s going to happen in the local Market. Whatever said and done few things are going to happen sooner or later.
ReplyDeleteAirtel’s CEO Amali Nanayakara has not resign and she is in Office to date pl. call or visit Airtel Corporate office @ 598 Alvitigala Mw (Near Apollo Hospital) if any of you have any doubt in this regard. Further Airtel for sure have a clear strategy as to what needs to be done in Sri Lanka and they have already attracted a well experienced pool of people (Locals) for their key positions, Airtel will not repeat any of the drams by IOC, ICICI Banks or Apollo cos their strategy is Global and local.
What is very interesting is that The BIG boy like Dialog has start to swat before even Airtel’s launch. Further one of the biggest Public secrets is that all operators are marking time without giving Airtel the facility to interconnect on the rates that all other operators have connected their networks (with- out Inter-connect Airtel customers will not be able to call other networks)
This is just a few facts about the true ground situation and expects more in days to come !
Hey this is for all of you who are looking to be employed @ Airtel. Please send in your CV's to # 598, Alvitigala MW, Colombo 05. Pl. mentioned your areas of specialization and Remember Airtel prefers candidates with Industry experience. Good Luck !
ReplyDeleteDK
Oh! great! I'll post my CV also.. :)
ReplyDeleteairtel rox, hey launch airtel soon and get dialog to move them selves out the country
ReplyDeleteairtel rox, hey launch airtel soon and get dialog to move them selves out the country
ReplyDeleteill send my CV 2........ so happy dat airltel is lauunching in sri lanka
ReplyDeleteAirtel... Just another 'GAS tel', has been a while to roll it off the ground, Airtel is sweating out to hook their RBSs on to other operators towers!!!
ReplyDeleteairtel will not launch this year! very certain about it, just heard it from a credible source, may the above phrase is correct,. 'GAS tel' rightly put ;-)
ReplyDeleteI think they had to postpone their launch so many months because of inefficient operations, and as they couldn’t predict the market behaviour of sri lanka which is very much different compared to india. Airtel wanted to start operations in sri lanka with Rs.2 per minute. But we have experienced that currently there are so many revolutionary packages in sri lankan market which give voice and video calls for less than 25cents per minute. And the current market penetration is over 60%, so that Sri lanka really doesnt need any other operator. So, do we really need Airtel?
ReplyDeleteat the moment dialig is the most efficient mobile operator in sri lanka. the only problem is that they charge for incoming calls whereas
ReplyDeleteothers dont i think dialog is so confident that they will not lose there market share that they dont bother to do away with the incoming call charge. the day do away with the incoming call charge most probably thay will get 100% of the sri lankan marker share
v'll c
ReplyDeleteBetter competition is always good. I hope all mobile per minute charges and other mobile charges drop considerably.
ReplyDeletebeing first to introduce GSM to sri lanka in 2000, dialog acquired a large market share going over 60%. but with the increased competition and after other operators like Tigo and Mobitel started GSM expansions, dialog is now loosing their market share in big amounts. for example currently their market share is below 47% and still going down. on the other hand, Mobitel being the last to introduce GSM to Srilankan market in 2004, now has become a real threat to all other operators like Dialog, Tigo. now they have raised their market share more than 25% and adding 150000 subscribers each month and introducing attractive packages for targeted large segments of market. most recent example is the package for government servants and pensioners giving 1000minutes free outgoing to all fixed lines and incoming free from any network just for 240 rupees per month.

ReplyDeletePersonally I'm a Mobitel fan cz they are the cheapest in Sri Lanka and they don't have hidden costs much. For an example if u take My10 of Dialog, they change a huge amount for the number change. But Mobitel Any8 is free!. There is no argument that Dialog has (had) a considerable market share but that's not because of their efficiency but because they didn't had any other good competitor. Even after the relaunch of Mobitel, Mobitel didn't had any attractive package so that market share remained intact. But we saw what happened after they introduce SMART 5. As I believe Airtel will have to struggle for at least 5 years with the current competition. When they announced Rs 2 per minute couple of year back, it was a big surprise for us. But now it is not a surprise anymore will all these outgoing free packages. I was so lucky to work in a government institute, so I got the chance to change my package to UPAHARA. No argument that it is the most cheapest package in SL.
ReplyDeleteThere is a great possibility for Mobitel to be the market leader by the end of 2009, i belive. Now the have a good array of packages, but they have one more thing to do. That is to built up some more transmission towers and enhance network capacity. Because I have personally experienced that they have not covered some key towns even. Malabe town is a good example for Mobitel's poor network infrastructure. Their Malabe transmission tower is miles away from the town and as a result we have only very week signals even to the city center. The other area is SLIIT, the largest IT Campus in Sri Lanka with about 2500 IT people, but Mobitel is serving these people with Malabe tower and another one which is miles away so calls get droped always. All others have setup towers specially for the SLIIT building and the surrounding.
So final thing is i cannot agree for the statement by that anonymous person who is saying Dialog will get 100% if they make incoming free, as the market is much competitive now.
yes upahara is sold like hot cakes.., but the fact is that how many will continue to use it after few months, 80% of the connectoins will be churned out, that's an eyes closed prediction! Dialog still retains mkt share above 55%, and the Smart 5 was a big failure, directly from the sources of Mobitel, they charge you a fixed rate when you opt for this, if you go through your past detailed bill, you will have nearly 70% of the numbers being Dialog... Dialog should charge for change of numbers on My 10 as from the mkt point of view as smart sri lankans as we, will keep switching the numbers prior to a long a call, and it's a very direct common sensible notion. Mobitel can do wonders if they are straight and smart! they deceive the customers most of the times with their adds. (they claimed that they were the first to have HSPA tech, but they had only 1 RBS running in CMB, where as Dialog had many towns covered with HSPA/HSPDA Base Stations) however I'm not a fan of Dialog but rationally looking at the Mobile Industry in Sri Lanka, Dialog took Sri Lanka to be in the line of some of Worlds biggest Operators.., hats off to Dr. Hans...
ReplyDeleteGuys ! SL’s mobile story is really hoting-up and I must say for those who say Dialog is the most efficient and best pl. see if Dialog is not fearing of Airtel and Other Competitors why is Dialog Replicating all VAS services tec. That Airtel is doing in India ? See www.airtel.in Most of you have correctly pointed out that Dialog has lost their share in a study way and what has happen to their Share price Rs. 24 to 12 . give the flip side of the BIG story. (I myself has shares in Dialog.)
ReplyDeleteWith regard to Airtel launch guys do not underestimate their expertise just tells me how long Dialog/Mobile/Tigo & Hutch took to launch their GSM network! All of them have taken over 1 and half years. PL. remember Dialog has taken over 9 + Years to offer what they offers and Airtel will give the same and Mach – Much more with a better Benefit package before the end of the year.
Guys what do U think Holding the Launch of Airtel it’s the network rollout and the Inter-connect with Other Operators. In this context Airtel has not made any blunders provided they launch this year.
What we have forgotten is that in SL the outgoing rates are coming down but we do not have free Incoming we pay for it directly or in-directly! Dialog is the biggest earner on Incoming calls and all the other too earn a lot of money!
Keep Going !
DK
Yes, the prediction can be true if the Airtel do their launch at right time with a right package. There is no other reason for the government servants to throw away the SIMs. I don't know whether SMART 5 is a failure, but what I feel is SMART 5 made mobitel into a profitable company after many years of their GSM launch. So how can you say that package was a failure? Anyway according to Mobitel's business goals it could be a failure because they normally set goals which are practically impossible to achieve with their strategy. So probably they might have think that all the Sri Lankans will get SMART 5 because it offers the lowest outgoing rates and in that way SMART 5 could be a failure for them.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Dialog made mobile telephony more popular in Sri Lanka. Others made it affordable. Can’t you remember outgoing rates from Dialog KIT was Rs11 at the time of SMART 5 launch. Yes, I agree that Mobitel is good at giving false facts about their network and customer base. Their website says they have around 950 base stations as at August 2008, but I saw several days back CEO of Mobitel has told they currently have 1500 base stations . I wonder how they built around 55o base stations within one month.:P.
However as a mobile phone customer, what I observe about Airtel is they are deploying their network in a very methodical manner. It seems they are building their network after planning very well. For an example in galle road several new towers are being built (I think owned by Airtel), even by thinking of line of sight. I know LOS is not needed for GSM but signal drops will not occur even though the tower is miles away. Between Kolpity and Moratuwa there are many strait areas in goal road and it seems most of these areas are covered very little number of towers. But other operators have think only about the height of the building only. Anyway this is my private observation.
Airtel will definitely be yet another unsuccessful indian investment as did most of other indian investments. One best example is Hutch, which is a big operator of india but a oomplete failure here is sri lanka who couldn't achieve at least 5% of the market. On the other hand the two malasian investments have successfully acquired more 80% of the sri lankan mobile teleco market as Mobitel & Dialog.
ReplyDeleteThe investment done by Airtel in sri lanka is extremely not enough to cater current sri lankan teleco context. Best example is Airtel is going to start their operations here only with 150 base stations where as Dialog has 2000+ base stations and Mobitel has 1500+ base stations with islandwide coverage. No doubt that 90% of sri lankan population is already covered except for north and eastern provices. It will take ages to Airtel to match that coverage which Dialog, Mobitel and Tigo are offering. Definitely Airtel will be another Hutch if they continue this kind of stingy investments and snail operations.
Please dont blame current operators who have done very hard work to bring the telecommunication industry to a great position in the region over last two dacades. Full credit should go to Celltel, Mobitel & Dialog who set the standards to entire region. Those indian investors are just trying to harvest our well grown market.
I have done researches on the developments on various versions of Mobile tech! I have been there, done it though I don’t work for any operators in Lanka, thus this is coming through the research made by a team of people phase to phase!! Dialog/ Mobitel never simulated or replicated Airtel, (had they done it, we would not have even smelt 3G in this part of the world, Airtel is still testing 3G and it’s not even on Commercial trial in India, no certain date on deployment of 3G in India..,) Sri Lanka was privileged to be the first country in South Asia to have the first ever Edge Technology through Dialog (Mobitel was the first GSM operator in the world to ‘launch’ EDGE in parallel when they rolled out GSM Operations), Dialog switches were the first in the South Asia to have 3G and HSPA technology, Dialog was the first to launch 3G Roaming in South Asia and there’s many… where Sri Lanka was privileged to be the first in the region, thus the story of replicating Airtel doesn’t exist! Setting up a GSM network is a process, can’t be done overnight! Only the guys who have Cable channels will know about Airtel, not the mass…, thus it will be just a matter of time to get into the minds and hearts the people, so comparing the time-span of launching a network is out as the technology shifts gears day by day and will not be the same ever. Dialog was smart enough to skim the tariff as they were the first GSM operator in the country and now they are slashing the tariff at the right times! It’s really getting hotter, We can only predict, analyze and argue but Only God knows what’s in store for this country and who will be able to keep their heads above the water ;-)
ReplyDeleteAre you working for Dialog???
ReplyDeletenope, I'm at the Uni, did my thesis on the subject..!
ReplyDeleteMy friend Sadun you have got your data all wrong Hutch is not an Indian Operator and it’s a Honking based Company and they have 6 GSM ventures all over the world including 3 Mobile AU> etc. Hutchison group sold its India venture for USS 20 Billion to Videophone where they made a good fortune. On what ground you are saying Hutch Sri Lanka has not got even 5 % of market what is their base they have 1.3 Mil total base and active may be half this and this is same with all 03 operators.
ReplyDeleteOnce again you have underestimated Airtel and you say investment is not enough and who says they have 150 towers they have already establish 350 (these are at different stage of completion) + they are talking to other operators of sharing infrastructure and if this goes well (Provided other agree) they will have over 100 + with an year. I agree to the fact building infrastructure is the challenge as it take time.
My Uni friend I really don’t no what U have done your research and at what time it was done what are you talking about GPRS/EDGE/3G all technologies that are available when you purchase your Network infrastructure and it’s not a big innovation ! When you buy the MSC you have GPRS as an extra node same with 3 or 4 G.
In India how can Airtel do a 3G trial Indian Government has not issued any 3 G licenses in India Yet? Sorry Mate U have miss that in your research !
Please tell me why Dialog Launch song Cathcer! Phone Backup ? in hurry Airtel has them in their VAS portfolio ! And you will see few more.
Guys Must of us have not see the big picture yet and you will see it soon !
Cheers !
DK.
Hi,in my phone I have 212 contacts with 350+ phone numbers. I've ONLY TWO HUTCH numbers. That's how Hutch performs in sri lanka. Before commenting on 1.3M hutch userbase check your phone book. (unless you are a hutch employee)
ReplyDeleteDear Friend. PL. dont fool your self form where did you learn to dicide market share of a compnay my lloking at the number of entries in once phone book. PL. see Data on TRC and the reserch reports by 3rd party reserch agences. I'm not a Hutch employee pl. dont shoot in the dark. Hutch targets the low end of the market and they have done it to a given extent. they are only pre paid and no post paid. i'm sure you live in colombo and any other main town. Pl. talk to some low end users of mbile and see U will find few of them using Hutch.
ReplyDeleteHi there, mr. DK you must be a real half baked cake, you don’t know a jack about what you are talking, I’m an Indian for an intro…, do you know that Airtel and others were given full license to deploy 3G, HSDPA will be the mainstream tech in coming days, they have been given 3G spectrum to test equipment in anticipation of a launch later this year, the investment is so so high and expensive to deploy 3G in a country of Indian nature, it’s geographically big and every corner you have people living under the poverty line, (350 million people under poverty line), according to the research commissioning 3G would result in higher subscription rates/ fixed rates to it’s users and majority are not willing to pay the price for it! Optimists say India can leapfrog slower-bandwidth tech with a speedy launch of 3G. But there are some questions whether India is really jumping ahead of the curve or blindly following in the footsteps of operators in more developed markets—where 3G’s fancy gizmos proved hard to sell to consumers. We know, high-end data and video downloads and Bollywood movies on your mobile, yada, yada, yada. But here’s a frank assessment: “3G as a revenue booster is far-fetched at this time,” We have a very strong Cable Broadband network which is developed to work at the similar phase! I don’t know anything about the innovations in your country and copying the features of our operators.., but any features or new services are just vital to any operators and I think it’s just an illogical belief of yours to claim the GSM services faked or copied as they are very much fundamental to an operator. Airtel could be a real threat in time to come as they got nothing to lose, it's tough time for them to be blond in universal stipulations with other local operators out there... of course I know one thing for sure is that our Music Industry has an impact on Sri Lankan Music and they are trying to copy them ;c) but I saw you guys are ahead of our operators in terms of Mobi technology and Innovation, and I just checked out the Mobitel and Dialog sites claiming everything that they are the first… who cares…! So be proud of it brother, be proud of your mother country!!
ReplyDeleteDialog launched Prethichara against Upahara! 'per second blaster' check out the site...! it's a killer man..! it looks to be the best available deal now!
ReplyDeleteYes Dialog has countred "Upahara" what will heppen is it will lead to "canibalization" all existing Dialog users will change thier packges to this. where els mobitel is targeting 500 K Piblic sector employees, whihc is a new market for Mobitel.
ReplyDeleteDK
Definitely. We all know until last year, Dialog had many post paid customers who were paying Rs 3000 - Rs 6000 monthly. But now we don't see such people, because of the cannibalization as well as the competition from other operators. On the other hand Dialog has no any other option which will keep the existing customers with them. Definitely "Upahara" will be a great success. Any one can see it if you go to a Mobitel office these days.
ReplyDeleteStill Upahaara is in top as Per second Blaster is offering free calls only to Dialog numbers. The have a rental of Rs 300 and with taxes it will be Rs 390. It's good if Mobitel can also introduce per second billing.
ReplyDeleteOMG Dialog, what the hell are you doing these days? Dialog blaster is a Disaster for dialog and for sure it will definitely blast Dialog from all possible degrees.
ReplyDelete1. Per second billing is a real revenue loss eventhough subscribers not really attracted into it. It will only encourage the customers who try to take 10seconds calls rather than sending an SMS.
2. When considering the Mobitel Freedom package, Hutch 12 package and Mobitel Upahara package, those packages brought Sri lankan market into new paradigm of using your mobile as much as you like. People were encouraged to wards mobile communication while giving so much efficiency and productivity.
3. Now again what this Dialog has done by giving per second billing. They again try to encourage people to become short callers ignoring the benefits to the society by fullfilling the real communication needs of the sri lankans.
4. Dialog's new postpaid package will never match Mobitel Upahara package. Because mobitel addressed a fresh market segment and they will expand it towards more and more segments who really use both fixed and mobile communication.
5. I believe that mobitel can simple introduce Per second billing if that's their objective. But i strongly believe Mobitel always drive the market towards popularizing more and more mobile communication rather than being stingy on your consumption.
My conclusion is we never want per second billing. But we need more and more freedom to use our mobile phone.
Mr. DK, you truly don’t know a jack about anything in the Telco Ind. save your time on something worth..! No rough connotations, but you truly talk junk..! Mr. Indian and the Uni guy were some what right about what’s happening around in the industry!
ReplyDeleterightly said. Dialog made mobile communication so popular in Sri Lanka. Use of SMS is a good example. But Mobitel made mobile communication much cheaper and USEFUL in Sri Lanka. I used word useful bcz if we have to pay around Rs 15 for a call, most of the ppl will not be able to get the maximum benefits. Dialog rates were like this 2 years ago. But with the introduction of Smart 5 we saw a rapid decrease and a good competition of prices.
ReplyDeletePer second blaster cannot do any revolution here except decreasing the average revenue per subscriber...
Is there any interconnection fee between mobile operators and fixed line operators? Otherwise how can Mobitel give free outgoing to fixed lines? I cannot understand why cannot Dialog give out going free to fixed lines also?
ReplyDeletemobitel is an official partner of SLT... thaz y they can give free outgoing for landlines as well...
ReplyDeleteHey Mr..... why are U taking thinsg so personally. on what grounds U tell me that i dont know JAK ! abut telco. Indian Guy and the Uni felloow is fine who are U ! you just made comments without any base/fact's. i'm sure you are the one who said that Hutch Sri Lanka is an Indian Comp. and they even dont have 5 % market by looking at your phone book.?????
ReplyDeleteHey Bro. be open and come with some rational rather than empty words. whne U comment give an id like mine
Cheers !
DK
hi guys,
ReplyDeletewhats your thought about dialog new package versus upahara?
Dialog package is just a dummy one. what does it offer for Rs 300+ Vat? only 1000 minutes to dialog numbers. Who cares? How many other Mobitel, SLT, Lankabell, Suntel phones out there? so dialog can't even think about getting some upahara ppl back. however there is a good chance of dwngrading some dialog super 500 ppl to dialog blaster package
ReplyDeleteCosidering the growth of Mobitel & Tigo and the loss of market share of Dialog and Hutch this is my prediction for 2008 (as at today). This includes the recent popularity of packages introduced by Mobitel and the popularity of Tigo with their strong branding . Dialog and Hutch as they did over recent years, still loosing the market share.
ReplyDelete2008: Dialog 47%; Mobitel 25%; Tigo 19%; Hutch 9%
2007: Dialog 53%; Mobitel 18%; Tigo 15%; Hutch 14%
2006: Dialog 57%; Mobitel 17%; Hutch 16%; Tigo 10%
And please don’t forget Hutch over stated base in 2007 by a mistake which they accepted and corrected recently.
I heard that Airtel charges will be as follows. Does any one know whether they are true?
ReplyDeleteMonthly Rental : 150/-
A To A Outgoing 1/- +Taxes(Peak and Off-peak)
A To Any land line 2/- +Taxes(Peak and Off-peak)
A To Other Mobile 1.50/- +Taxes(Peak and Off-peak)
SMS A To A FOC
SMS Other Networks 0.50/- +Taxes(Peak and Off-peak)
MMS Any Network 1.50/- +Taxes(Peak and Off-peak)
why are you guys shouting against each other for some telephone company? besides, all the companies are foreign companies and none of them is 100% sri lankan. The one and only 100% sri lankan telephone company was celtel and after they changed to Tigo, it also became foriegn. We give all our money to other countries and we shout at each other talking for those companies, what will you gain? nothing.
ReplyDeleteYou Are Correct!
ReplyDeleteYou are Wrong!
ReplyDeleteCelltel was never Sri lankan company. It was always owned by Millicom. Change from Celltel to Tigo was just a brandname change in order to keep it same all around the world. It is & was 100% foreign.
On the other hand, Sri lanka telecom, Mobitel half owned by government. Lanka Bell too has sri lankan investors. Dialog is a quoted company under CSE since 2006.
But Airtel, Tigo, Hutch, Suntel all 4 operators fully foreign investments.
Dialog Per second pkg is definitely a breakthrough in the Mobile Industry as it was offered to the entire sri Lankans in appreciation of their presence in Lanka, this is an offer given without any discrimination, We as sri Lankans never had the habit of appreciating good things but believing in criticizing everything good that comes in our way without fail, be it hutch, Mobitel, tigo or Dialog, everything boils down to how much a customer spends at the end of the day for his total Mobile communication!!
ReplyDeleteAs a note, I work for Dialog. Per Kamal's comment above.
ReplyDelete1. Per second billing is a good thing for Dialog to introduce. This means that we offer savings on both short calls as well as long calls (via the Lifetime Discount). Since you can combine the packages, that means to save money on a 30 second call (Per Second Blaster) and a 30 minute call (25% of the second minute, 50% off thereafter).
2. Upahara is not available to all Sri Lankans. Also, 'unlimited' calls are really limited to 1000 minutes by their Fair Use Policy (http://www.mobitel.lk/pdf/upahara_faq.pdf). Calls thereafter are 50cts, billed by minute.
3. Not exactly Dialog's place to specify how people talk, but per second simply saves them money.
4. Upahara, again is not available for all Sri Lankans, whereas Dialog tries to deliver packages that can serve everyone.
5. In terms of popularizing connectivity, Dialog offers great upwards mobility to customers. Our Lifetime Discount rewards long conversations as well. More generally, we are encouraging Sri Lankans to get on the Internet and connect to the broader world through GPRS, HSPA, WiMax and satellite TV.
@indi
ReplyDeleteyour blaster also has 1000 minute limit. after that 2 rup to dialog. upahara its 50 cents after 1000 minutes to mobitel as well as land lines. you also exactly like dialog management, misleading customers!
Mobitel UPAHARA and Dialog Blaster are not same. As sanjan said, Dialog is always misleading customers. We know that Mobitel is giving 1000 minutes outgoing free to Mobitel, SLT, Suntel and Lankabell phones. But Blaster is giving 1000 minutes outgoing free only to dialog mobiles. But in their advertisements
ReplyDeletethey says only "1000 minutes outgoing free", which gives the impression that they are also giving outgoing free to other networks also. Blaster's rental is also high. Only good thing is the per second billing.
@indi
ReplyDeletetell me one offer dialog gave before others. OG free started by mobitel. per second billing by tigo. then only your customer care comes. if you want to serve the customers why you went to courts against total incoming free package offered by mobitel in 2003? you better search for a job! dont try to justify cheating dialog. i still use dialog because i want that number. moment trc gives number portability i ll move to mobitel or airtel.
all you guys are typical jobless jacks, you haven't even seen the color of Airtel and people are already talking about moving to Airtel!! live with what you have now and thank god for that,, if you don't like Dialog, just move on to Mobitel.., don't keep harping on it!! be real folks, don't be another typical brainless punk :-)
ReplyDeletehi guys
ReplyDeleteits very interesting topic
millions wait till airtel comes, because of the frustration towards dialog. i also use dialog, as i dont have a better option at the moment. if u want to learn how to cheat people, just work for Dialog.
i bought a dialog broadband 3G sim and its a real disappointment. they say that is unlimited, but they reduce the speed to 56k at exceeding 5Gb. if u want to get the speed back u have to pay 100 rupee rent per day. how tricky these people!
nawshad
ReplyDeletemobitel is a better option than both dialog and airtel. you ll find out with in 3 months
Nawshad, you too proved to be one of those typical ordinary individuals, Dialog will not just connect your Unlimited Broadband connection without your consent on the Fair User Policy! so just don't complain, if you feel the speed is slowing down, you can pay that extra 100/perday and be quite without complaining! anyways I’m not dialog fan/ employee but you should talk sense, I too use a connection and it is much faster than the usual ADSL/M3 connections!!
ReplyDeleteMonthly Rental : 150/-
ReplyDeleteA To A Outgoing 1/- +Taxes(Peak and Off-peak)
A To Any land line 2/- +Taxes(Peak and Off-peak)
A To Other Mobile 1.50/- +Taxes(Peak and Off-peak)
SMS A To A FOC
SMS Other Networks 0.50/- +Taxes(Peak and Off-peak)
MMS Any Network 1.50/- +Taxes(Peak and Off-peak)
A totally useless package. I will never buy this packages because we already have two available packages from Mobitel & Dialog who combinely have 75% of the market share. There is no free voice or data bundle available where as there are packages for 240-300 with 1000minutes of free bundles and 50cents of call charges.
Airtel, you have to give a real magic package if you need to churn subscribers from other mobile operators...
Air Tel in Sri Lanka have done a cosiderable work for Sri Lankan Mobile Phone system even without launch their sim. So all other mobile telecom companies are tend to reduce their call charges to survive with the arrival of Air Tel.
ReplyDeleteActually i want to the date of AIRtel launch yhe operation in sri lanka.
ReplyDelete@Kumara
ReplyDeletewhat do you know about celltel? it bought by millicom and changed the name to Tigo, you know nothing man, I know because I quit celltel after it became Tigo...
Hey Mr. Blog Owner my earlier blog comments on Airtel JOB Openings is still not On ! whats Up ?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, I didn't receive such a comment. Could you kindly repost it?
ReplyDelete@ anonymous who talk about dialog speed,
ReplyDeletedont spread false facts. publish a speed test. dialog is hopeless compared to M3 or ADSL. dodt wish others in trouble just because you are in trouble with a network locked dialog modem.
http://sinhala.kalingasblog.com/2008/09/16/dialog-unlimited-mobile-broadband-hsdpa-vs-mobitel-m3-borodband/
yes. dialog broadband is useless. get M3, even if you dont satisfied you can move to other operater as modem is not network locked.
ReplyDelete@nawshad
ReplyDeletedo you get speed before 5Gb. answere is NO. its always less than 1mbps. their 7.2mbps is a real fake. just do a speed test and see.
@Anonymous who continuously claim that Celltel was a Srilankan company
ReplyDeleteYou know nothing about tigo or celltel. The brand name done from celltel to Tigo happened in January 2007. Celltel was fully owned by Millicom from 1989 onwards until now. There was no change of ownership happened upto now. Please don't mislead the community with FALSE facts...!
If anybody has any more doubt please visit,

for Millicom annual reports and try to have a look at one of the annual report.
i got a news that tigo going to start a new boardband service!..
ReplyDeletepls update abt this;if this true.
still i didn't heard something like that. But ill post if i do in the future.
ReplyDeleteAbout broadband
ReplyDeletehi guys thanks for ur comments
i am using this dialog broadband for about 2 months. when i purchase they didnt get the consent for the daily rent of 100, but they have added from the D1 without exceeding 5 gb and i never asked for that extension, i complain and they said they will fix it.
my package is university offer and rent is 1500 per month so its cheap then any other for me, only problem i have is 3G coverage, i had 3G coverage for my area and i bought it, but i dont get the indoor 3G. so i use this at my working place only. if u dont have 3G, this is utter shit.
max download speed i get at 3G area is around 150 -180 KBps(around 1200kbps), better then ADSL, but dnt knw abt M3, pls comment people who use M3. (and i think there is no unlimited package in M3)
max download speeed at gprs is 8KBps(arnd 60kbps) worst compared to any net connection.
but within few months time all broadbands will be cheap a call chargers. hope for that esp if Airtel comes wit broadband
@nawshad
ReplyDeleteM3 1 mbps is better than your one.
Hi all Airtel JOB Seekers! i hear that Airtel has openning for VAS,CS,Finance and Network etc. pl. e mail you CV's to thier official HR e mail: careers.lanka@airtel.lk Belive me they offer a great working enveronment, Trainning and a fat pay check !
ReplyDeleteGuys when do U think Airtel is going to Launch ? is it December 2008 or next year ?
ReplyDeleteWhat ever said and done, currently Dialog has best call rates with its revolutionary Blaster package which is definite threat to Mobital Upahara.
ReplyDeleteCalling FREE or for 50 CENTS to all fixed line numbers in addition to mobitel numbers cannot be matched by any other blaster package. dialog blaster is good only for the ppl who can't get Mobitel Upahara package coz it is only to state sector and pensioners...
ReplyDeleteHunters are Hunting fools are counting.. keep on doing!!!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my god..
ReplyDeleteSooo many problem in this country n u guyz jst talking abt mobile operators....shame on u all....
but as a matter of fact all most all the service providers are same..its like politics.. Personally if u like ur mobile operator u never change ur set of mind...but not for all my dear 4nds..
So i think this will be an another an endless talk. so the pls keep ur mobile service provider as ur personal choice which matches to ur needs and wants..coz every one here doesnt hv same kind of need to use a mobile ph...
and for ur info.. I have tried all these mobile service providers’ deals beside airtel...and as i said its all depend ur needs. So stick to on it...
I’m not so defensive to b offensive...
Regards..
Chula
Dear Chula,
ReplyDeletePlease try to understand there are ppl who with different interests. If you are not really interest in this topic and if you are really interested in solving other problems in this country, go and have a try. Wish you all the best.
There are various kinds of stakeholders as well. Don't just try to put everybody as a bunch of 'Users'. As we can clearly see, not everybody who commented on this topic are just 'users'.
You are correct on one point. Thats about 'personal interest'. but speaking, commenting, analysing, critisizing...etc everything depends on personal interest.
so, just go n look after your other problems. This topic is really hot and i believe it should continue as long as this industry remains.
Thanks
people like to be informed friend (from above post). We like to know what we are buying before we have committed. But maybe you have so much money to Buy -> test -> then make your decision but not all of us do. So dont try to patronize the general public to think your way.
ReplyDeletePersonally i am also aware all the bull Dialog is doing. They charge like hell and all these special promotions are to cover there losses. And like most social divides, they are really use full for businessman who or rich people. I dont call anyone not on my My10 for more than 2 mins max so these offers really dont get me.
But the persecond thing looks good but i aint wasting whatever they charge till I know what airtell would dish out. And Dialog is not good at updating their Bill on time. I cant check what my bill for the previous day coz they updated their bill for this month, October only today which is the 21 after the 9th so i was totally left withought knowledge of my bill coz 0777678678 also knows only the bill i get for #456#.
up to you future cuztomers.
Helllooooooo.....
ReplyDeleteAirrrrrtel is on it's way....watch out........
Rgds,
Diatel
Chula, you nailed it perfectly! yes, it's a waste of time and everything is politicized. if you c the big picture, Airtel will invest heavily and penetrate and after acquisition of a decent mrkt share, they will definitely dictate terms after sometime as obviously no one is here to run charity and would wanna go on making losses!
ReplyDeletewell well... all these companies are making huge profits and its not helping our economy at all... i think telecom have to get strong and launch efficient and effective communication service.. Till then it s no good for our country.
ReplyDeletePlease hurry up we are looking forward to your launch of Airtel!!! dialog and mobitel have aleady started giving some good facilities making it hard for new companies to compete, but i dont think it would much of a problem to you, and PLEASE give us a good internet connection, along with ur 3G also we expect that you will give us low rates which will be very convenient for us....

I went through out the blog and found it to be really interesting! people who are up to their own mobile service providers praise themselves. You can comment anything, that's no big deal. I'm not a follower of any mobile network in here. But I have used Celltel, Dialog and Mobitel packages since 2000. Those days they were really expensive. My first connection was a Celltel. Then I switched to Dialog as having a Dialog number was a sort of a pride to mobile users those days.
ReplyDeleteRecently I bought "Upahara" of Mobitel.
But now I'm using my Dialog connection.
There may be hell lot of reasons for people to argue on behalf of their preferred service providers. I personally can't shift to any other network as almost 70% of numbers in my phone book are Dialog. Due to this reason my last month Mobitel "Upahara" bill was almost 1500/=. And even I was totally frustrated about the customer care of Mobitel. They took almost 3 weeks for the SIM activation and still didn't refund my deposit of the previous connection. I just let it go as my life is not going after the mobile service providers. We have our own obligations to fulfill on behalf of our own country. Even it's really difficult to contact customer service agent through the mobile and also I had to commit almost 30mins of my valuable time in listening to the bill of my own connection. Dialog was never like this. I appreciate the fast connectivity, widest coverage and their best customer care service. Time is so valuable. According to my experience, still Mobitel, Tigo or Hutch couldn't reach the clarity and the quality of the network as Dialog has done.
I don't know about Airtel. They may be another competitive mobile service provider to Sri Lanka. Let's see... Switching to networks is good when you have nothing to do. I have seen that most of the Sri Lankans are so unprofessional. When something is cheap, they don't concern the quality of it.
I have no comments on Tigo or Hutch as they are far behind Dialog and Mobitel.
Some one has mentioned that Dialog has cut off their revenue by introducing per second billing. just get this to your mind, you can switch to any service provider which is cheaper to you. If Dialog lose revenue or they gain more, it's up to them. They'll decide what to do or not.
Finally I should mention, the cheapest service provider depends on the user. for me cheapest is Dialog, for some one else it'll be another operator. Why wasting your time by arguing about Airtel that you have never experienced?
Don't be typical Sri Lankans who always praise something unseen. Cheap is not everything, just go for good quality!
@ annonymous
ReplyDeletewhat you said about mobitel customer care hot line is true. but it only happened with upahara package.
but clarity of dialog network is far behiend mobitel. just try to talk in a fast going car! you ll get lot of disturbances. mobitel network is very advanced.
please everyone comment on new topic, "upahara or blaster"
everyone please comment on new topic, upahara or blaster
ReplyDeleteThis Upahara/Blaster revolution makes us to think of the huge amount of national revenue they have "stolen" from us in the past. Now they are offering both outgoing and incomming calls free of charge. They are still surviving and in fact, still they should be making profit.
ReplyDeleteThat means call charges we paid to these mobile companies had been their "pure net profit". They had swallowed a huge amount of our money. Now they offer free packages, not because they love us, but due to "Airtel phobia".
People who argue in this forum (for both upahara and blaster) are not genuine and are not representative of sri lankan mobile users. They are surely people "paid by" dialog and mobitel to promote them and condemn others. Like Rupavahini, ITN vs Sirasa and TNL. None of them are genuine.
@ may be right While driving its difficult use Dialog but still the Upahara service is a mess. It may be just like government servers. and I totally agree with AD.
ReplyDeleteHi, u hv any HR/ADMIN vacancies.. position for a person (female) with 5 years wking exp + good educational background(currently doing the MBA).

Hey Yoooo AIRTEL fans ! I have good news for you. Airtel is doing a soft Launch on 17th @ Mt. Lavania Hotel and the Good News is that they will Launch in December ! Let the Fun Began ! Dialog/Tigo and Mobitel has alredy done what they can do what Next ?
ReplyDeletehey airtel srilanka is very wors cz i wnt 4 an intrvw ovr dere, i ws waitng mo dan 2 hrs,evn dere z no chairs 2 sit
ReplyDeleteUpahara or Blaster Hi people, sometimes Airtel doesnt need any advertising costs because they are alredy adverised by our people there.can any one tell me that their network code 073? 076 or 079. iwould eger to know it.
ReplyDeletei am mobitel fan but sonmetimes mobitel only offer good servise to prepaid customers. But its is far more better than dialog.DIalog cant compete with mobitels HSPA technology.Because SlT is behind mobitel and it belongs to State. And even sometimes mobitel is govvernments mobile network. You people may agree with me about Dialog 3g.It takes long time to launch but mibitel bib it very quickly. And majority of 3g customers use mobitel sims.
Most successful network in Sri Lanka is Mobitel.. Because it belongs to 49% to government. if they take a decision to reduce their prizes more, definitely dialog will vanish. We should proud to be a Mobitel customer. Because at least 50% of our money we save. all other networks 100% suck our money to foreign countries. So guys be a Sri Lanken- Be a Mobitel...
ReplyDeleteNovember 13th came and went- so did November 17th! Still no news of Airtel Launch!
ReplyDeleteko nene!!
Hi. Airtel is giving 3G to colombo area.As once they start.Ans sure they will increase it.Any one can tell me their network code? 073? 076? or 79?
ReplyDeleteI'm Mobitel SMART prepaid user. Now Mobitel networks get jammed Most of the time.even in the mornings.I think this is due 2 Upahara Outgoing free calls.
ReplyDeleteSince Mobitel offers upahara, They didnot offer any thing to SMART prepaid users. The big problems with SMART are
1.We have to pay Rs.5+Taxes a day to get All incoming free+Any 8.
2.No persecond billing.
But dialog offers Both for free. Now I think KIT is the #1 prepaid connection in market.[I'm not dialog fan..but speaking honoustly]
Do you agree my friends? Comments???
No dialog cant be first. Will see how they loose their market.Mobitel is going to do wonderful thing.they are waiting until Airtel launches. Then they will do it. Dialog will blast soon.
ReplyDeleteI feel sri lankan mobile subscribers are very lucky!!
ReplyDeletemore the competition, more the benefits.
Yeah....This is a one good example of the advantages of an open economy. Higher the competition among service providers, higher the advantages we get as consumers....
ReplyDeletebtw...i know this AirTel drama acting in
Sri Lanka from behind the scenes. Guys....our very own service providers are really pushing on AirTel launch. Mobitel offer Upahara, Dialog; they came up with Blaster....last but not least....TiGo came up with their non-conditional incoming free policy...:)....seems to be good huh????
IMPV... AirTel does not have surprises anymore. all revealed by other service providers. so they really looking for a dramatic but realistic offer as their key-tone.
hopefully we might get good quality service from AirTel since they have outsourced their all IT related stuff to IBM.(Trust me...its a US$100B Contract hybridized between India and Sri Lanka)..
so what else???? Ah....thousands of job openings will be enlisted and several hundred of employees are currently trained and well set to go!!
so...as sri lankans....we need competition!!!!
Hope Dialog, Mobitel and other Service providers will come forward with some good offerings...
Cheers to Telecommunication!!!!
Please hurry up we are looking forward to your launch of Airtel!!! dialog and mobitel have aleady started giving some good facilities making it hard for new companies to compete, but I don’t think it would much of a problem to you, and PLEASE give us a good internet connection, along with ur 3G also we expect that you will give us low rates which will be very convenient for us....

i think airtel should kick out all srilankan telecom services its gonna b cool our stupid dialog, tigo n all services its all crap dey have been wasting our money dats all cumon airtel pls cum soon to use ur services...
ReplyDeletehi peopl,Airtel doesnt provide theie tarriff detais to TRCl yet.But their network code is 075.I think these guys will not launch this year.
ReplyDeleteBEWARE !
ReplyDeleteDialog is overcharging you without your knowledge. It is tested and proved.
On one hand it is resonable because they are losing their customers one by one. They should anyhow cover their operational costs. In order to survive, they are over-charging remaining few customers in secret (without customer's awareness).
They put the first step in this strategy by promoting non-detailed bill recently.
(Although they say that their objective is to protect trees by reducing paper use, that is not acceptable. Because, they use high quality large envilops, high quality papers, leaflets and promotional notices on high quality papers etc. To produce those high quality papers also trees are destroyed)
DO NOT BE MISLEAD. Do not cancel your detailed bill from dialog.
Hi try this number 0751234567 This is Airtel number and this only works in Mobitel phones.
ReplyDeleteIn our school days, mobiles were not widely available. No Mobitel, No Dialog. Even few had the "luxury" of a land-phone.
ReplyDeleteWe wrote and sent letters to our friends, relatives. I was in college hostel and communicated with my parents via letters by mail. (NOT E-MAIL). For any urgency we tried telegrams though it was late. If the messege was a very urgent one, then we communicated thruogh telephone with the permission of the hostel warden (or through "coins-box").
Important fact is that we "communicated" with distant people that time also. We did not not miss anything or did not have any disadvantage. We loved, sent letters, cards to lover secretely.
But it is true that we could not give a running commentry about us like "now i am in bus, now i am at Berella going to Maradana, Now I reached Maradana, now i am taking lunch, yes i had lunch" etc. Is it important?
Finally, what advancement in our lives have been made by Dialog/Mobitel/3G/3.5G/3.75G/SMS roaming/.......?
What about shutting down all these mobile service providers and strengthen land phones, postal service and more importantly telegram service?
Airtel has opened their towers. But seems only in colombo area. You can see it when you make a network serch(manual serch) in yourv mobile.Sri5 shows in it.
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeleteTRC is currently analyzing the prospect of introducing MNP( mobile number portability) in sri lanka , once launched the number will be users and those who are stuck with a operator cos they don't want to loose the number can move between operators keeping the number.
we can expect competition and packagers more drastic than what we see now once that is done
this is expected in 2009
rgs

Hi Guys, i see some intresting comments and out of which the comment "we dont need communication and it has not give us any advancement" I'm so sorry (Anuradha) you seems had a bad chilhood in your hostel. I dont think you live in this world. No matter what it is (Land or mobile) communication is a single most important factors for a county to move forwerd Hey wake UP we like in 2008 and soon it will be 2009. Today you can talk to any one over 240 Countries (How much is a IDD Munite ?) or SMS for Rs. 2 or 5/ One can run a business with a telephone. you may be not aware many people make thier living by having a Mobile ? Pl. dont waste time in making such foolish comments.
ReplyDeleteGeys Airtel is on NOW and they did thier test launch ! they will launch in December 18th 99 % sure. its a 3.5 G HSPA network with all Valuaddedd featuers and few more of what we have not seen will be there.
Packge all whats is out is not by Airtel and they will give some thing Extream ! YES ..
Dialog is Lredy Pissing in thier Pants as that is whay Mr. Nushard Perera has call Airtel as Teroirst. dont understand whats worng with Dialog they nevr gave people of this country a value for money dela dn now they are all agenst Airtel knowing Airtel is capable of doing some thing in the market.
So Ar you Ready !
MNP may not come as Dialog is fully agents it if so they will be out of busines at the rate they are loosing customers !
ReplyDeleteIf we as public can put pressure on TRC to bring MNP we can see a customer driven market in SL. we must build a voice and push for this and we can have what ever the number and there will not be any operator pre fix (077/072/071/078/075 etc.)
Some ppl blame about mobitels customer care and saying that Dialog has the best customer care. But Do you ever heard that Dialog calls their customers when they made an inquiry.
ReplyDeleteI recently buy 3g phone But i haven't Mobitel 3G coverage in my area.So i send them an email expressing my compain. After 45 minits.I got a call from mobitel customer care agent and she ask me details about area i living in and told me that they will inform the Engineering section. After few hours i checke tha=e mail and i received below email
Dear Mr. Nirmal,
This is in response to your e-mail and the subsequent telephone conversation I had with you today.
We wish to inform you that our Engineering Team has confirmed the expansion of 3G coverage in *********area within next three month.
Please call me on 071-*******or forward your queries to ******8@mobitel.lk for any further clarifications.
Thank you,

Snr. Customer Care Executive
Then i am very much satisfied with their customer care.
People who values Foreign things always find and commenting Sri lankan things.Thats why our Nation downgrading every day.Every developed nation in the world value their local products and servises.Do you know SLT and Mobitel 49% Belongs to government.BUt Dialog,Tigo and hutch are foreign companies.Dilog and Tigo says save money from their per second billing but every cent you spending doesnt save in Sri Lanka they are flowing in to Malaysia and USA.But if you mabe a call from SLT or Mobitel Half of the call charge going to Government.Even not to some millionaires bank account like LANKA bell do.
Now not only Dilog.Another Indian money earner Airtel entering to our market and our foolish Sri Lankans waiting for low rates.Every indian thing Bring our society bad recults,Think about Indian MEGA Tele DRAMAS and IOC do. This ppl have to be brainwashed.
ppl in lk will thankfully accept any wound or a illness if its freely available. thats Y they waiting 2 airtell. but dont 4get if there isn't sufficient income operators will not upgradre their network with THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY . I think it's no need any new network & 4 operators will B enough 2 lk. If not competition Will Derstroy our mobile market coz of loss.
ReplyDelete@ isuru nirmal
ReplyDeletethank you for your comment.
i totally agree with you!
all of u can remember the ad done by dialog, activate disconnected sims /unused sims 4a long time ,free of charge.i tried it several days n ask from dialog to activ8 my old sim card.dialog told me 2 pay LKR300 to activ8 it. has Ny1 paid 2 activate old sims vt other operators. dialog always misleads us. but most of srilankans dnt understand it n if v said that 2 them they says v do shopping 4 other networks or netwnrk v use.
ReplyDeletecant help.

Everytelco is having their share of problems...in Sri Lanka ...
ReplyDeleteDialog is loosing its employess like crazy, ask any employee inside it privately, especially the customer service guys who shed blood and tears taking Dialog into great heights..
Mobitel is struggling with the overdone Upahara package,,,try calling hotline,,i ve tried for days, still couldnt get across, further the billing issues seem to be hurting it alot,
Hutch lost its vigour with Dialog, Tigo and Mobitel going on a killing spree...Its last ditch effort The Hutch 12,, didnt do much good, with the incresing churn caused with people leisurely changing sims//
Tigo despite its relaunch, continue to make losses, and taking a heavy toll on their expansions,, dont dare to buy a Tigo postpaid connection, hell with the billing issues, ..ever wondered why MMS is free in Tigo,, coz their billing system cannot bill for it due to an issue
Airtel, after its initial buyinhg og Dialog employess, looses its team,,a consdierable amount of Dialog emplyees joined Airtel,,to realise practically jobless( Airtel management now realises they got a bunch of jokers who joined thinking life will be easy)
Now we as customers, just need to do some simple math an stick to our own thesis n choosing an operator based on ones lifesyle and requirements.

ReplyDeleteAirtel Chickening out!!??
Anyhow Airtel is going to start their operations soon... it's true... I saw a arcade with Airtel address board(covered by polythine) in Mount Lavania (Between M'Lavania junction and Cargills Food City), which is still not opened... So wait and see what they going to do... My idea is all the mobitel and dialog customer who are barking here, most proberbly the future Airtel customers... thanks... - Sakaf
ReplyDeleteAll other current Sri Lankan operators have formed a cartel against Airtel and slowing down Airtel's progress through lobbying with the regulatory, refusing POIs etc.
ReplyDeleteWell its obvious the current operators are scared stiff of Airtel's entry...
We should be suport for Airtel..as it would be great for the employment market..
Don't sell your ass to Airtel...And Don't blame on other operators due to inefficiencies and incapability of one shitting failed operator who never deliver what they promised.
ReplyDeleteJust see this link;
http://www.sundaytimes.lk/081221/FinancialTimes/ft303.html
All other operators have given interconnection to Airtel. But Airtel can't launch here yet, coz they are lack of trumps to give a sales boost in their ramp up period.
Airtel, you first try to launch here...How tough before the launch....???
Can you imagine how tough, AFTER the lauch...? Airtel will fall for sure as they can't recognize Srilankan market.
Go to Hell Airtel...
Proud to be a SriLankan....!!!
Airtel launch delayed
ReplyDeleteLaunch plans of Bharti Airtel Lanka (Airtel), the Sri Lankan arm of a leading Indian mobile operator, has been delayed as the company’s Indian parent has still not granted sanction to start operations as yet, according to senior telecom industry officials. "Airtel was looking at launching somewhere on December 23, and they said that this is a tentative date as the company still has not got approval from their head office in India for the launch date," one industry official told The Sunday Times FT.
He said it might well be launched next year. Airtel officials were unavailable for comment. Airtel which is the fifth operator cleared some issues last month with the existing operators – Dialog, Mobitel, Tigo and Hutch on Interconnection Charges last month.
An industry analyst said the increasing cut throat competition amongst the existing competitors has triggered a price war in the industry. "Airtel's impending launch has aggravated this situation," he added.
"Proud to be a SriLankan...!"
ReplyDeletehow dialog says that? this malasian shit is selling our country for their marketing gains. we all should refuse dialog, as they wont hesitate to do any dam thing for money!
Who Cares Dialog...???
ReplyDeleteWe are talking about the emerging market leader, Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel....!!!
At least majority owned by SL government + they have always made communication, more Affordable in Sri Lankan market
Long Live Mobitel,
You alwayz give something amazing
In general.
ReplyDeleteMobitel is jhonney came late, when they had a huge base and good coverage with TDMA and analog technologies. they should have studied the trend of mobile technology and switched to GSM at that time it self. without doing that they just marked their time till whole customer base drained out n then they switched and strugling regain it.
Dialog has no intrest to serve reward to their customers. they just keep pushing and play their monkey pranks.
Eg: when mobitel gave out going free for 3months or more during their launching period. dialog blocked the mobitel networks dialing them.
but fact is when somebody has given somthing they will also give something little better to secure the customer base still at a little fee (which customer himself justifies a comfertable charge than going to a new network).
Eg: balster 300 to go along with uphara.
Tigo had the the chance to grab the 100% market share (when it was previously known as Celltel). but they were running on a diffrent stratergy which made them loose as well.
currently Hutch is lying low with some avarage attractive packeges.
but onething i have to say. compared to dialog mobitel has much better reception on the phones. makeing a call via mobitel is much ez-er task than from dialog and even the data speed is better.
At a glance.
Airtel announcement of sri lankan wing has made a revolution already in sri lanka even though air-tel did not or has not benefitted from the revo created by them.
majority of sri lankan market has more intrest on the call charges. than facilities or relaiability of company or swithcing to a new number or bla blaa blaa. so still air tel is there but they may have to expect a losses in atleast first two years. to gain a customerbase. and sri lankan market always look forward to get the benifit of compertition among MSPs.
Hi
ReplyDeleteI am a srilanken looking for a job in sri lanka air tel
Airtel has launched... checkout there wonderful ad campaign.... Now thats truly Sri Lankan...
ReplyDeleteHey!
ReplyDeleteI heard that Airtel's "Hello Sri Lanka" advertising campaign was leaked and thats how Dialog came with Hello and proud to be a Sri Lankan TV commercials it seems. Is it true?
But NO matter what...Air tel's Hello sri lanka TV ad is superb. I felt it!
While it is true that Mobitel M3 doesn't have a huge amount of free data bundle, as a subscriber who use a M3 connection I must say that now their rates are far more affordable than any other ISP.With the reduced tariff Mobitel allowed the customers a broader surf area.Though the installation cost of Dialog HSPA is cheaper, the monthly rental is very very high.To those who have published various comments in terms of the speed I must say that please use M3 before you comment.M3 is the fastest & most reliable way to the net for the time being. Neverthess I'd agree to the fact that Mobitel is lagging behind many of the competitiors in terms of the prepaid and postpaid mobile communication where they have failed to introduce a per second billind system or all incoming free prepaid package despite the recently reduced tariff.
ReplyDeleteNot even 24hrs and Airtel number campaign is a massive hit.... I even hear Nushad had driven pass the outlets and were shocked about the crowd.....
ReplyDeleteis there any vacancies in srilanka chilaw branch?
ReplyDeletehappy dat airtel lunch in srilanka.
smtharanga@gmail.com
Mobitel is not looking after their existing post paid customers and they are going to loose the bird in their hand looking for two in the bushes. I am referring to their Double M package. You know I pay Rs. 3,000 per month before levies and taxes for only 900 minutes free. After that it is Rs. 4 per minute. I am looking seriously at changing to Dialog as Mobitel is ignoring existing customers. I even wrote to the Prepaid Account Manager who is not active. Only if they better the Dialog per second Blaster offer. Anyway for the time being it is best to have a Dialog per second blaster for post paid fans. Mobitel Call Center cannot be reach eternally. By any chance if you get the call center the agents are the best in the industry. Dialog call center can be reached but the agents are ar0gent and you feel like strangling them if you can. So this is the situ.
ReplyDelete@ ERANTHA
ReplyDeleteWAIT 10 DAYS. DOUBLE M WILL BE UNBELEIVABLE!
ERANTHA
ReplyDeleteYOU HAVE 1GB DATA BUNDLE. FOR US ITS 20,000 RUPEES. YOU ARE GETTING IT ADDITION TO FREE MINUTES. DONT TAKE DIALOG, YOU DONT KNOW HOW WE SUFFER!
IF MOBITEL GIVES SOME ADDITIONAL M2M MINUTES FOR DOUBLE M IT WILL BE THE BEST POST PAID PACKAGE!
EG:DOUBLE M 3000
OG CALLS 900- WORTH ATLEAST 2000 RUPEES. IF THEY ADD M2M FREE MINUTES IT LL BE MORE
SMS 200- WORTH 200 RUPEES MINIMUM
MMS 75-WORTH 150 RUP MINIMUM
VPN 100 MINS AND FREE SMS- ATLEAST 100 RUPEES
3 SUBLINES- ATLEAST 600 RUPEES IF DIALOG
1GB DATA- 20,000 RUPEES IF DIALOG
YOU GET THINGS WORTH MORE THAN 20,000. USE IT, DONT BLAME MOBITEL. ITS REALLY GOOD!
is there are vacancies yet in AIRTEl
ReplyDeleteNuwanthika.....
ReplyDelete60% of the staff has already been recruited in Airtel.....
Hi All,
ReplyDeletejust to update you guys, Airtel is launching on the 12th giving away SIMs FOC - AWESOME!! my god the queue in front of Airtel offices! just like the Mobitel launch! hehe.. well all i can say is, Sri Lankan telecommunication industry is in this state today SIMPLY BECAUSE OF DIALOG AND SLT (DIALOG - MOBILE, SLT FIXED LINE!) NO Airtel or relience coming in can change the fact that THEY MADE THE COUNTRY! in terms or atleast keeping us at teh pace or rather ahead of the world.(first to launch 3G and WiMAX in Asia - Dialog)
and the investments that Dialog and SLT are making on the NETWORK expansion (dialog is laying fiber connecting all the base stations in SL- investmetn 100 mllion(12.500 bill) USD basically the profits it made in 2006 and 2007) just to improve our industry.
and what is Airtel doing? Network - outsourced, retails outsourced (PC House), Corporate sales outsourced, call centre outsourced. IF and when they realise that SL is not as attractive as it seems they will just wrap- up pack there bags and LEAVE!
BTW did i tell mention. SL is a test market for them because the smallest sample in India is 50 million! and SL the population is 20
they will give free sims, phones in SL, get the response and do a study and sell and make profit in India!
anyway!
what ever it is, i LOVE the brand Airtel they touched hearts in India
but they can never touch the hearts of Sri Lankans we know who brought us to this stage in the world (in terms of telecommunication) and we respect that
CHEERZ! may Dialog - Mobitel RULE!
Yeah, and if Dialog really luved you, they would have provided you with blaster packages from the beginning rather than wait until Airtel came. Thank you pretty bottom that Airtel is here darling!
ReplyDeleteHey I heard a rumor that a few of the people who have joined Airtel are actually Spies mainly from Dialog. Thats why they copy of most of their ads.
ReplyDeletewell most of Sri Lankan Money will be sent to India when ppl start using airtel.
ReplyDeleteofcourse ppl are looking forward to vathatel, but to you realise a LOT of money is going to go out of the country with airtel coming in?
They are using all INDIAN resources for advert development and internet stuff, so ofcourse money paid for their internal services too go to India.
Other telecos half only small % foreign. But Airtel is full foreign.
Sri Lankan money used on intangibal phone calls go to India if you are a PROUD USER of Indian AIRTEL in SRi Lanka. might as well go to india and use a phone there.
typical eunuch in a harem - sees it being done all the time, but can never really do it himself. You seem to be going nowehere faster than the speeding bullet

REPLY TO ABOVE:
SRI LANKAN? wITH SHARUK KHAN AND INDIAN MODELS? EVEN I CAN GO AROUND DA COUNTRY AND FILM SOME STUFF AND CALL IT SRI LANKAN. BUT THESE GUYS SHOW INDIAN ACTORS. DOH... INDIAN INVASION I SEE.... NEXT 10 YRS WE WILL BE SPEAKING HINDI, WEARING KURTA AS NATIONAL GOWN AND SAY NAMASTE IN THE MORNING. WELCOME AIRTEL... WE WANT TO BE INDIAN. FORGET SRI LANKAN. WELCOME AND MAY YOU TAKE OVER THE SRI TELECOM INDUSTRY AND MAKE IT ALL INDIAN. SRI LANKAN? INDIAN INVASION!
stop this indian sri lankan arguement. otherwise all take mobitel. how this dialog suddenly became sri lankan?
ReplyDeleteultimately airtel invests in sri lanka, everyone should realise that! dont try to protect sinking dialog, they are feared to maximum and copying others adds now!
don't boil your blood over these petty things. at the end of the day we are just concerned about decent package, good coverage and reliability with benefits neda?
ReplyDeletemy friends from dialog went to airtel. not bad. though network coverage still not airtel's stregnth, package good lu. but can the beat Upahara and blaster? mobitel has good strong standing in country. Dialog is great with young crowds. ppl call airtel vathatel. lets see what airtel can offer.
why do we need a 5th mobile telecom provider in this small country? I can't decide among tigo, mobitel, dialog and hutch! they keep giving better packages themselves. 5th one will make me even more confused!
ReplyDeleteLet's see what this 'HulanTel' or 'WathaTel' going to offer next week. They are trying to make use of bollywood mania of Sri lankans. That's why they use Mr.Sharuk in front. What we really need is, not that good old Sharuk. but a Good package which can beat Mobitel or Dialog. Plus, Good Coverage, Good Customer Service & Attractive Value Added Services. Unless why should we switch from Mobitel/Dialog to WathaTel.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, i suspect that Mobitel/Dialog/Tigo will sleep in next few weeks. Definitely they will come up with Better packages as they don't want to sell their Customer base to this Indian Predator.
What a Week to Come...?
God Save All Operators
Blessings for All Customers
Cheers...!!!
TRC people have been shocked at the rates offered by Airtel... Even they want to switch.. Means only one thing.. Airtel is not after profits.. Just market share... As for indian models..My friends say, only Sharuk has been used for one advert. Other people are all sri lankan. No more adverts with that old guy.. They are going to be more Sri Lankan that our other so called S.L companies..
ReplyDeleteGuys, sm1 pls let know if we could apply online..?
ReplyDeleteDialog share is decreasing.

I WOULD LIKE TO AIRTELL MEMBER
ReplyDeleteI WOULD LIKE YOUR AUTHORIZE DEALEAR
ReplyDeleteado me topi awata kamak ne. outgoing free deepalla.neththam thopith epa.vishabeejath bo karannaepa
ReplyDeleteTHEY HAVE LAUNCHED.............
ReplyDeleteAirtel Plans are a utter disaponitment!! 2/- to any network and sms 1/- to any network...jeez after all the hype ths is what they are offering?? CRAP..the local guys will surely match easily and i dont see anything major about the plans. But the only thing encouraging is the data pacakge 1499/- unlimited uplink and downlink...other than that..Very disapointed..i expected something better to convert my 5 Dialog lines into Airtel...
ReplyDeletewhat the hell.......
ReplyDeletepost paid pre paid all have same charges...
they should have come up with a better packages..
atleast A2A for very very cheap price..
actually i also wanted to have an airtel connection but this rates are not worthy to buy 1... i have a mobitel connection at the moment and i can have free calls to my all friends.. and before that i had a dialog package which i could call ma girl for 0.50 rs and for ma friends 1 rs... so i think airtel also should come up with better post paid packages
As Expected....
ReplyDeleteSimply Bull Shit...
'Airtel' proved they are really 'HulanTel'
Why should we switch from Mobitel/Dialog sacrificing Good Network Coverage, Capacity and Quality for this useless tariff plan.
Airtel, You Go to Hell with your crap...!!!
Airtel, You Go to Hell with your crap...!!!
ReplyDeleteAirtel has proposed 1/= to any network but the TRC SL has not approved the proposed tariff cuz they want to save the other networks from being bankrupt. This is the reality.
ReplyDeletewhy should TRCSL approve such a tariff ?
ReplyDeletehow can airtel free ride on others' networks
Why can't airtel give a low tariff for 'Airtel to Airtel' calls ?????
Idiots...!!!
dont lie to sri lankans no simcards available in the market
ReplyDeleteI just heard that Airtel has become the fastest operator in asia to reach 150k customers in just 4 days of launch.. They had never expected such a demand.. Other operators have started restricting calls coming and going to/from airtel network... I bet most of the people who write about dialog and other operators are ones who work there and hate competition...
ReplyDeleteHey Doods ! All of you seems heat Airtel ! well goood for U all! but i see people witing to get connections out side all thier offices/outlets and Airtel has alredy sold over 100,000 Connections ! and i dont think any of you are thinking as customer who use the service. what ever it is customers has a benifit (Incomeing Free on Post paid no rental and Rs. 2.00 to any network) Hey be realistic ? dont just Boost of Dialog i think all of you are from Dialog and u all are "Nayata Kade yanna" besides let the customer dicide who is best no matter it is Air "Hulan" or Future Today "who's Future".
ReplyDelete@Anonymous commented above,
ReplyDeleteWhat i can see is, you are working for Airtel. Otherwise why you hate others commenting good about other operators. We all customers of one or more networks. All have right to comment here. Don't be stupid. Uba Airtel ekata kade yanawanan palayan. Who Cares.
But let everybody to comment here. I love this blog post.
Cheers...!!!
@ all
ReplyDeleteonly upahara can be considered to be clearly better than airtel. if you analyse carefully you ll see that airtel is better than dialog kit and blaster by long way. mobitel smart should reduse OG rate to other networks atleast to 3 rupees to compete. no need to reduse to 2 rupees i feel as smart gives lot of innovative features like freedon and 3g mdaily delight.
Everybody expects better tariffs from Airtel.
ReplyDeleteBut the hopes faded away with the launch.
Airtel is second only to Mobitel upahara package. The wrong with Airtel is they do not offer reduced charges for at least 1 Airtel No,As KIT double and mobitel M best friend facility...Unless how can lovers survive? [Mal kadanne komada?]
I think whne people express thier views they have to be rational and one also needs to have some form of self respect. so please dont used words that warm feelings of others. I fully agress that this forum is for all and it is opne for any comment or view. Mr. WEB master apprecate if you do not approve comments that has harsh words or any statements that are worded in a manner that it harms the self respect of people. we all need to have a minium level of self respect to each other as we are humans and not animals! I personally do not endorse the comment "Uba Airtel ekata kade yanawanan palayan" why one has to used this likd of language !
ReplyDeleteSadun mind you language ! comments on rational gounds rather than using filth. Which School U learn this language ?
ReplyDeleteGuys pl. stop this Sri Lank and India talk. Its good only for Lanka Bell ! if you people are really Sri Lankan and do not want to used Multinational brand then pl. STOP using Signal/Bata/Panadol/Coke/Pepsi/Call Imporated cars and all other itesm ?
ReplyDeleteJust Think of it and pl. dont wast time in bringing foulish arguments whats is this Airtel India and Dialog if From Malasiys/ Tigo is Singapore/ Hutch is Honkong/ SLT and Mobitel is now owned by Maxix Telecom Malasiya/ Suntel is also the same and Lanka bell too still have large part of overseas investments even Harry J has a large share ! So whats the big deal abut Airtel been India if we can have 3 weelers and cars and Hindi fils and all forms food from India why not mobile. Pl. finally we as customer should get the benifit !
Welcome to sri lanka .Please let us know about airtell internet facilities
ReplyDeleteConclusion:
ReplyDeleteDump Dialog, Throw away Tigo, Don't give a shit to Airtel. Hutch, nothing even to think.
Mobitel...?
At least majority stake along with Sri Lanka.
+ they have SLT in back with 150 years of history.
So, better use Mobitel, if you love to be with somewhat local brand.
Ayubowan Sri Lanka
Has everybody lsot intersest in airtel??
ReplyDeleteno body comments any more!!
has everyone lost interest in airtel? no body comments any more!
ReplyDeleteDialog Blaster is better than Mobitel in my case... I have activated Blaster with Life time discount :)
ReplyDeleteairtel seems to be an obvious disappointment!!
ReplyDeleteMobitel has given new rates for Smart pre paid- (M2M 2/-, M2NM 2.50) coming very close to Airtel rate of 2/-
ReplyDeletecheck http://www.mobitel.lk/prepaid/tariff.html

Mobitel - We Care. Always
airtel is better
ReplyDeletebut you have to think about your coverage
there are no clear coverage to homagama area and also think about AtoA outgoing fee
Recently i got airtel HSPA unlimited connection which is 1500 and they claim they dont have fair user policy.
ReplyDeleteIn my area (Boralesgamuwa) we have full airtell 3G coverage. But the max HSPA i can get from 6-9 is around 100kbps (around 12KBps).
sometimes the download speed goes low as to 2KBps. dialup might be better than this rate.
Now im thinking of throwing my airtell sim away without paying coz Airtel is faild to provide the service that they promised.
Hi Guys, Airtel seems to be having a cool set of Value Added Services, I just tried a few of them and sounds good !
ReplyDeleteThey have Welcome Tunes (CRBT) on 7551 and *888#
Voice activated service 7552 for Music/News/Lottery/ Astro etc.
Dedicated Music Service 7553
Voice SMS is on 7554
Voice Mail is on 7556
All subscription service can be access via *999#
Try them it’s a new experience.
Cheers !
@anonymous
ReplyDeleteYou are working for Airtel, isn't it ?
Just go to hell with your crap
looks like everybody has lost interest in airtel after the initial fizz- just like a soda bottle.
ReplyDeleteno body comments here- earlier there were quite a few comments per day on airtel and its virtues
Seems people wanted A2A and thats what airtel has delivered.... Lowest rates within the network... seems rates are all downhill hereafter... Wonder what more surprises are coming this way since the holiday season is approaching...
ReplyDeleteHey Folks whats do u Guys think of Airtel's new Prepaid traif ? 47 Cents or some thing ?
ReplyDeleteHey Sameera ! who the hell are you to tel me to go to hell it dose not matter i work for Airtel or Dialog Mind your own business you fool ! just simply don't weast your time ! Remember this is a open blog sit and all can expres tiher views and comments !
ReplyDeleteLMAO, @Anonymous who work for Airtel,
ReplyDeleteYou have successfully proven that you are working for Airtel. Thanks
That's why you try to create some boost, which doesn't exist at all.
Just go to hell with your crap...!!!
Hey what’s up with Dialog ? I’m writing this specially directed to those who Boost abut Dialog saying "Lets Protect our Dialog" the news is that some divisions have been force to submit their VRS this means over 40 % of the staff will be sent home with a Cheep compensation package !
ReplyDeleteThis is what usually happens when you work on ego rather than common sense !
Abut Dialog VSR pack. They tactfully waited till Airtel’s recurrent to be over and now they are asking people to leave how fair this is from the so called NO 1 Company who has the NO 1 service team ?
ReplyDeleteHey Doods Airtel is rocking they are going to offer Outgoing free ! U will hear it soon ! ha ha ha ha ha ah ! Mr. Dialog what have you got to say Now . Just keep silence as you have no blady shit to say NOW ! Hooooooooooooooooooooooo !!!!
ReplyDeleteThe main reason Dialog is doing that to there staff is because of high overheads and lower profit margins.. After Airtel entered the market, now they are just managing to break even.. When the head of Airtel had come down for the opening, all he had wanted was subscribers, not profits... They have cash.. Dialog's cash is running out...
ReplyDeleteYou Idiots,
ReplyDeleteDialog started making losses NOT AFTER Airtel. It was from the beginning of last year. You have to wait until this quarter performance report of Dialog to see what Airtel has done to Dialog.
By the way, i think Mobitel caused more damage to Dialog with their recent packages like Freedom, Upahara & Prepaid price reductions. All these resulted Dialog to introduce Lifetime discount, Blaster & per second billing.
Airtel never offered what they promised. I don't think it caused much harm to Dialog. But Mobitel really did.
God bless all operators
It was from the time TRC issued the 5th mobile license to Airtel that the price war among mobile operators was triggered... Until then, there was no proper postpaid or even prepaid packages offered by any operator.. Everyone was happy to pay Rs.5+ for outgoing and almost the same for incoming.. Airtel had to come to burst the bubble many people lived in with Dialog...
ReplyDeleteYou are wrong again...!!!
ReplyDeleteYou may not aware or may not willing to accept what Mobitel did 3-4 years back with their SMART 5 package. They dropped prepaid prices to Rs.5 to any network where all operators were operating at Rs.11-15 per minute. There was no 5th operator license by that time. They continued dropping prices along with other operators.
Now what Airtel has done here is just re-introduction of Mobitel SMART 5 as Airtel 2.
But Rs.2 per minute is no more attractive because market is settled at 20-30 cents per minute with packages like Upahara, Blaster & Freedom.
Hi All, I think we need to Open a new Topic calles "Is Dialong VRS Fair by its employees ?" cos they did not let any one to join when airtel had over 300 Openings ! I kknow this cos i worked for Dialog !
ReplyDeleteWEB Master over to U !
