Sri Lanka’s Dialog Telecom has rolled out a new wireless internet broadband system using Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMax) technology. WiMax a IEEE 802.16 standard based wirless technology which provides last mile broadband access to subscribers.
At the moment Dialog offers four variations of three broadband packages.
Speed 1 - 1Mbps Down / 256 Kbps Up + Mail box
Speed 2 - 2Mbps Down / 512 Kbps Up + 5 Mail boxes + 10MB web space
Speed 2+ - 2Mbps Down / 512 Kbps Up + Static IP+ 5 Mail boxes + 10MB web space
Speed 4 - 5Mbps Down / 512 Mbps Up + Static IP+ 5 Mail boxes + 10MB web space
Speed 4 package has a monthly rental of Rs.13000 and Rs 5000 connection fee. Speed 1 package has a monthly rental of Rs.4000.
Current leased lines offered by SLT are priced between Rs 20 000 to Rs 200 000. However SLT also initiated a WiMax project earlier to Dialog Telekom middle of last year. But still they are not offering WiMax broad band commercially.
