All four Sri Lanka's mobile networks suspended short message service(SMS) temporally during the 60th independence day celebrations as a security measure. Telecommunication Regularity Commission has informed all four companies to suspend their SMS service as a measure to prevent various groups sending false warning messages among public which will reduce the number of people who participate for the independence day celebrations. SMS service was unavailable from 6.00 am to 1.00 pm.
How ever independence day was celebrated near galle face grounds in Colombo in a grand manner with a large gathering of civilians as well as government ministers and foreign diplomats
I doubt that's the real
ReplyDeletereason if that was the official one. For one why assume it matters that ppl will stay away. Actually the less civilians that could watch on tv the better.
I think its more to do with limiting coordinated attacks. Yes they can use voice but I'm sure that's tapped anyways. SMS can be short and often meaningless. I'm generally against tapping and censorship but if it means we give up that freedom for a short while to save lives especially of those who needs to finish the job so be it! Just hope it doesnt become a pattern like in the US
Yes, I agree with you. Nowadays even school children knows that telephone conversations can be tapped. One wise way that can be used by terrorists to communicate is by SMS.They can easily use some secret language so that no point of recording sms.
ReplyDeleteHowever as officials may not reveal the real reason for this suspention, this could be the reason that they have published.
good effort by sri lanka inteligence to protect some valueble heads.
